E-learning Day 14: 25 July 2008
After some brainstorming, I was able to come up with a topic that was not too controversial on Issues on Sex. How is pregnancy confirmed? For a change, I decided to not use http://wikipedia.org/ but instead make use of http://google.com.sg/ solely for this research. Pregnancy can easily be confirmed through a test that measures levels of pregnancy hormone, known as Human Chorionic Gonadotrophin (HCG), in a woman's urine by a doctor or a personal testing kit. This test is carried out on the day where a woman's monthly menstruation period is due about 2 weeks after conception. However, higher accuracy can be obtained after four weeks instead. Higher concentration of HCG in urine are usually present during early periods of the morning. Besides, HCG can also be detected in the bloodstream by a doctor two weeks after conception when the menstruation period of the woman arrives. Ultrasound after the twelfth week of pregnancy can also be used to detect the presence of a fetus in the mother's womb.
